Theater Tension Wire Grid at Aʻaliʻikūhonua Performance Space

The SkyDeck™ theater tension wire grid provides a safe overhead workspace while complementing the open-air architecture of Aʻaliʻikūhonua Performance Space, preserving natural airflow and unobstructed sightlines.

A’ali’ikuhonua is a flexible performance space designed to provide the capabilities of a high-end performing arts center while adapting to a wide range of theatre, dance, and music performances. Located within a distinctive open-air architectural environment, the venue combines functional design with an emphasis on natural ventilation, daylight, and visual openness. Its utilitarian steel frame and generous roof overhangs create a versatile structure, while broad windows extending across much of the building connect the interior with its surroundings.

To manage daylight and provide shade without compromising airflow, specially designed fiberglass grating was incorporated into exterior panels covering the building’s expansive glass walls. Large fans further support the natural movement of air through the performance space, directing it toward clerestory openings. Together, these architectural elements eliminate the need for a conventional HVAC system while keeping the interior open and uncluttered. The absence of extensive ductwork and mechanical equipment above the audience contributes to a clean ceiling plane and reinforces the spacious character of the venue.

Creating a safe and practical working environment for students was an important consideration in the design of the overhead lighting system. Technicians and students need reliable access to lighting equipment for performances, rehearsals, and events, but traditional access methods such as scaffolding or narrow catwalks could interfere with the building’s open aesthetic and natural ventilation.

IA Stage’s SkyDeck tension wire grid provided an effective solution. Installed above the audience, the walkable tension wire grid creates a safer working surface for accessing and servicing overhead theatrical lighting equipment while maintaining the visual and functional qualities of the space. Unlike a solid overhead platform, SkyDeck allows air to move freely through the grid, supporting the venue’s passive ventilation strategy.

The transparent nature of the SkyDeck system also preserves the sense of openness that defines A’ali’ikuhonua. By integrating a functional theatrical rigging solution into the architectural design rather than adding a visually intrusive structure, the tension wire grid complements the building while providing students and technicians with a more accessible overhead work environment.
